The United States of America is a constitutional republic. A constitutional republic is a state in which the head of state and other officials are elected representatives of the people and must govern within an existing constitution. In a constitutional republic, executive, legislative, and judicial powers are separated into distinct branches. The United States of America is also a representative democracy since citizens elect leaders to represent their rights and interests in government.
